BELLOWHEAD 2007
A Theatr Mwldan | Moneypenny Co-Production
Tour Dates: 31 January – 3 February 2007
Not so much a big band as a small independent country, Bellowhead is an amazing 11-piece musical collective that’s pushing the boundaries of English traditional roots music into unknown territory. The brainchild of the acclaimed and award-winning folk duo Jon Boden and John Spiers, Bellowhead includes a wonderful brass section to beef up a traditional acoustic core. Having broken the dance floor at Sidmouth, they won Best Live Act at the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards 2005, and their first 5-track mini-CD garnered 5 star rave reviews.
Bellowhead are legendary for their rare yet musically thrilling live performances. The range and sheer virtuosity of this band is stunning and their admirers come together from across generations and genres. Their first full album, Burlesque, includes 13 songs and tunes inspired by a dazzling array of material. The band’s ensemble playing is superb. It is not simply the technical ability of the individual players that impresses, but also the sheer musicality of the arrangements.
They have honed a unique style which sets them well apart from anything else you may have experienced. Deeply rooted in the English folk dance tradition, they merge a joyous, uplifting cacophony of sound that’s an inspiring and exciting collision of music hall, Lotte Lenya, Robert Wyatt, Tom Waits and pure theatre! This, their first select four-date tour of Wales, co-produced by Mwldan, is an unmissable event in the music calendar for 2007!
